About Inperium
Who we are and how we got started
Our mission is to connect organizations in a resource-rich network. While most of our partners are focused on health and human services, we can help organizations of any size, focus area, or annual revenue to grow sustainably without sacrificing values, identity, or mission.
The problem
In 2013, Ryan Smith had a problem.
He had served as president at the Pennsylvania-based disability support organization Supportive Concepts for Families since 2000. During his tenure at SCFF, annualized revenues grew from $4.5million in 2000 to approximately $65million in 2018. Additionally, the number of employees grew from 200 to 1300 throughout this time. Regardless of the exceptional growth within SCFF, the team still faced increasing concerns about its ability to meet its ongoing and future challenges.
Supportive Concepts had a growing wait list for its services, but the future seemed uncertain without more capital investment, IT system updates, and upgraded employee benefits. These challenges were set against a backdrop of changing service reimbursement structures.
By 2014, it was obvious that Ryan would need to grow Supportive Concepts substantially to obtain the necessary capital to reduce service costs. There were serious discussions with several potential partners interested in acquiring the organization, but Ryan ultimately declined each one.
While each potential partner brought unique strengths to the table, they also presented a single problem: Each one required that Supportive Concepts fully merge into their organization, compromising its mission, sacrificing Supportive Concepts’ name and culture, and threatening the jobs of many employees to save costs.
This wasn’t going to work.
The solution
Ryan began building a network of small businesses that served each other. Each new company reduced the others’ operating costs while also helping them grow. Supportive Concepts started to grow again, and the other businesses thrived.
This was working.
In 2016, Ryan Smith founded Inperium and partnered with eight other organizations in the first year. Each of these partners, including Supportive Concepts for Families, could enjoy the benefits of being part of a larger organization without sacrificing its identity, values, and mission.
Since 2016, Inperium has continued to grow exponentially. Every day, we provide value for both nonprofit and for-profit organizations who want to experience the importance of having a bigger team behind them. Our services have continued to expand, and we’re excited to continue building more resources for organizations like yours.
