Sustaining the Mission Brings the Inperium Model for Nonprofit Sustainability to a Wider Audience

On September 22, 2026, Forbes Books released Sustaining the Mission: Building a Billion-Dollar Nonprofit Network by Rewriting the Rules of Partnership by Ryan Dewey Smith, Inperium’s Founding Executive Chairman and CEO.

Although Ryan is its author, Sustaining the Mission is fundamentally the story of Inperium, its mission, its people, and the innovative model built over the past decade. The book reflects the work and contributions of teams across Inperium, Apis Services, and the affiliated organizations whose collaboration has transformed an ambitious idea into a national constellation dedicated to strengthening essential nonprofit organizations.

Drawing on Inperium’s experience, the book offers nonprofit leaders a practical alternative to going it alone. It explores how affiliation, shared infrastructure, access to capital, and disciplined collaboration can help organizations achieve lasting financial and operational strength without sacrificing their identities, local leadership, or missions. It serves as an invitation to executives confronting questions about growth, succession, and long-term sustainability. Its central message is straightforward: organizations should not have to choose between preserving their mission and building the strength necessary to advance it.

Forbes Books is supporting the launch through a broader marketing campaign. Throughout the week of September 28, the book is being featured in rotation on a prominent digital billboard in Duffy Square, in the heart of New York City’s Times Square. The campaign recognizes Ryan’s leadership and vision while highlighting what he and his colleagues have built together, and what their experience can offer other mission-driven organizations.

The book has generated noteworthy early interest on Amazon in both hardcover and Kindle formats. An unabridged audiobook, narrated by Jeff Holz, is also available through Audible, giving readers and listeners multiple ways to engage with its message.

In keeping with the book’s purpose, Ryan will not retain any of the net proceeds payable to him as author. He has committed to contributing 100 percent of those proceeds to Inperium in support of its mission.

“I wrote this book, but the lessons in it came from what my colleagues and I have built and learned together across the Inperium constellation over the past decade," he said. "By sharing both what worked and what did not, I hope we can help other nonprofit leaders build stronger organizations, protect their missions, and continue serving their communities over the long term."
